A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
