New research suggests that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
